I was again this evening contemplating the mystery of prayer. My freshman year in college I asked the Lord how I should pray for unbelievers. Though part of that question was answered, I still seek for wisdom. How can I be evangelistic and pray for people by name who the Lord has not spoke to me about? Especially, how can I do this when there is no record in the new testament of this ever occurring? People are urged to repent and are told that Jesus died for sinners, but never told that Jesus died for them specifically. No prayer in the NT ever is recorded that mentions an unbeliever by name in asking for his salvation. The only instance of this that I am aware of is when Christ tells Ananias to go to Paul and pray for him that he may receive his sight. But Paul was addressed as "brother" so his conversion was already effected. But Ananias had special communication from God concerning this man. I never do feel right in my conscience when I pray for the salvation of people by name. Suppose I pray for someone; I ask God to open their eyes, to cause them to repent, and trust in Him. Now, if that does not happen, what has really happened? Most christians would say that God sometimes doesn't answer prayer and that is none of our business, we should just be faithful and pray anyway. But, this answer is shallow I think. Jesus said that if we ask anything according to His name He will do it. Now, if it was not done, then either God is a lier or we have not asked according to His name. And it must be the latter. And what in the world were we doing, not praying in Jesus' name? Let me ask you this, when did Christ ever pray for something that did not happen? He is our perfect example. He said "Be perfect for I am perfect." Model Him christian, not what sounds "reasonable." Much care is needed when praying. People take too many things for granted. To not pray in Jesus name is sin, because sin is transgression from the perfect character of Christ. We should not just hope that some of our prayers are answered, but rather all of them should be answered. What is this nonsense about some prayers answered and some not? That is sin. Only a 100% track record is what we should be satisfied with. Until then, take heed that you do not pray in vain and in so doing make a mockery of prayer.
